Is Singapore a concrete jungle or is it an Oxymoron?

Image
Singapore is an island, small town (in terms of 284 Sq Miles), with a population of around 6 million has got 10 different express ways (AYE, PIE, BKE, ECP, KPE, MCE etc), 1 million plus HDB or public housing, apartments, 350k + condominiums etc. You can see plenty of high rise or skycrapers at every side of the island. Hence, it is also known as concrete jungle.  But the real beauty of Singapapore lifestyle is the addiction to trees, gardens and the every growing eco awareness. In 1967, then, Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew (LKY) wanted to build SG as a Garden City. And in 2024, SG is really a garden city. Why?  Number of Trees: 8 million plus Public space by Hectares: 7800  Number of Parks (including Neighbourhood):  75 plus Focus on vertical greenery (150 plus)  17 reservoirs Rail Corridor or Green corridor (an audacious idea of converting old train track to Malaysia as green sector thereby growing thousands of species and to provide space for walk / bike Eco Link...

Singapore, where to eat, drink and host

Image
I will take a different take on where to eat, drink and host your friends or relatives .... SG has plenty of hang out places and serve good drink. Market is dominated by some local beer Tiger and other imported beers such as Guinness, Asahi and others.  Why do you make social events?  To have a drink after a tough work day?  To celebrate some good things happening with your colleagues or friends? To host your friends and relatives who are visiting SG?  that means, you also need decent food to taste ! Hence, I will list down some good places to have nice food and some drink !!! They are not ranked in any order, but covers all sides of Singapore Island. 1)  BluJaz  , Bugis: Located at the commercial hub, they serve Italian food & Indian food. There is live music from 8pm. Pls get inside the pub or get the window seat behind the Live music gallery else you can't listen !! It is normally a crowded place during Fri and Sat. Do reserve and go.  2)  ...

Explore Katong and Joo Chiat

Image
Singapore has got some nice neighbourhoods to explore shop, walk, observe peranakan artefacts, couture from various regions & food (as always) etc.   Joo Chiat Road is one long road and has got lot of small lanes. Hence, the right starting point for your walk is Hotel 81 Sakura at Joo Chiat Road and walk toward i12 Katong mall.  Best way is to walk along and explore some shops based on your interest.  There are some interesting fashion shops such as EmGallery, Vintage Tale, Persian Boutique, Anglia, THWAB Store, r y e, Brisa, The AC etc.  Plenty of cafes as well such as Little Farms, Two Men Bagel, Petit Pain etc. There are some pubs as well - but I have not visited any recently. Gun Pub, Cider Pit etc Koon Seng Road has got some colourful shop houses and do not miss to notice the bright Peranakan tiles as well. There are some murals as well on large walls.  Food is wonderful to miss at Katong: 328 Katong Laksa is very famous and there is a nice 19th ce...

Effective Roaming of Singapore in 8 hours for Transit tourists

Image
I would like to suggest an ideal itinerary to carry out effective roaming in Singapore within 8 hours of transit time !!! Keen to explore, Here I go: Ideal Breakfast:  Little India : South India food like Dosa or Idly Or Puri at Komalas Restaurant or Madura Vilas Restaurant (near Little India MRT).  I like Pongal from the oldest restaurant called Komalas at Serangoon Road.  MTR restaurant is near Farrer Park MRT and it is Karnataka food and they serve excellent Masala Dosa and Uddin Vada as well.  Do get a glimpse of Srinivasa Perumal temple around MTR (dress code is needed);  Former house of Tan Teng Niah is bright and colourful as well and it is a great spot of Selfie (near Little India MRT). Allotted time is 1 hour if you go little India. Pls take a cab from Little India to Raffles Place.   Or simple Croissant & Coffee around Raffles place in any regular coffee shops like Starbucks or Tanah Merah or 6oz or Providore.  Time taken c...

Selfie walking route called Southern Ridges

Image
Hello Friends, Southern ridges is an excellent walking route for lot of reasons... one of them is, mainly for taking selfies with nice back drops. Route: 1. Kent Ridge Park [via Pond or direct canopy walk) : There are some 3 parking lots around the park. I prefer to start the walk from road side of NACLI office as it allows us to do steep climb walk of around 650 meters.  Once you reach the hill, you can either take right side direction to enter the park via road and to the main entrance of the park or take left [Car Park B] and carry out roundabout walk to see the Pond and enter the park after climbing some more stairs. Canopy walk is simple and not long,  you can read through some war time memory posters while walking. If lucky, you can spot some small green snake sometimes. This is also a good picnic spot. 2. Hort Park: You can enter the Hort Park (Back side) and see the glass houses. Enjoy the all around greenery, flowers, colorful plants and decors of Ho...

ECP Parkland Green to Stadium - Nature walk trail

Image
One of my favourite track for nature walk is taking a walk between Parkland Green [ECP] and Stadium.. it is around 6km and one can finish the walk between 65 min to 80min. Good thing about the starting point is one can have morning coffee at Cheers or Starbucks... the serene view at 7am is so mesmerising and sound of waves encourages your spirits.. on the left hand side, you can see the ocean while walking... it goes on till you reach the Tunnel near Tanjong Rhu. then the walk becomes little view less with some narrow terrain. then, it joins the backside of the Marina Bay golf place and you can listen the chirping sound of birds... You can now see Bay East Gardens visitor center.... you can refresh with water and use the rest rooms and connect again to a T Point... now, you will have to decide to either go rite or left.... right will take you to Stadium area and the left will take you to Marina Barrage through Gardens by the Bay, East. I like Stadium side... ...

Rooftop pool at Hotel Jen, Orchard Gateway

Image
None of my friends or colleagues mentioned anything about the Rooftop pool of Hotel Jen. I was pleasantly surprised when my Aussie friend showed me the pic during her stay. Then, i asked for help to see it once before she returns as it is meant only for hotel guests.. but we couldn't do it due to the busy site seeing schedule... I finally managed to spend 10 min before the check out.... To my surprise it was big.. 47 meter long...  and seats along other side... with a bar counter... The location / view is outstanding.. right above the Somerset 313 ... one can see Orchard, Raffles and Marina Bay Sands... It turned out to be a good experience. Soon, I will do a staycation to explore more about Hotel Jen. If someone is spending 200$ rent per day, I think, it is better to choose such a happening location.
