Is Singapore a concrete jungle or is it an Oxymoron?

Singapore is an island, small town (in terms of 284 Sq Miles), with a population of around 6 million has got 10 different express ways (AYE, PIE, BKE, ECP, KPE, MCE etc), 1 million plus HDB or public housing, apartments, 350k + condominiums etc. You can see plenty of high rise or skycrapers at every side of the island. Hence, it is also known as concrete jungle.

But the real beauty of Singapapore lifestyle is the addiction to trees, gardens and the every growing eco awareness. In 1967, then, Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew (LKY) wanted to build SG as a Garden City. And in 2024, SG is really a garden city.

Why?

  • Number of Trees: 8 million plus
  • Public space by Hectares: 7800
  • Number of Parks (including Neighbourhood):  75 plus
  • Focus on vertical greenery (150 plus)
  • 17 reservoirs
  • Rail Corridor or Green corridor (an audacious idea of converting old train track to Malaysia as green sector thereby growing thousands of species and to provide space for walk / bike
  • Eco Link @ BKE (for Animals & Species)
Hence, I wish to call this as an "Oxymoron" - yes, there are tonnes of concrete. But be happy about it. Singapore is probably the only government which provides consistent public housing year after year when compared to other developed nations.

Also, there are hectares of green. Go, bike, walk and enjoy. Green brings peace to mind for sure !!
